RP Basics

RPG and RP - What does it stand for?

Its quite simple really. RPG stands for roleplaying game, whereas RP just stands for roleplay/roleplaying.

What is Roleplaying?

Roleplaying is a game and altogether fun. A roleplay is where you have a set plot of some sort and play a character through a story with other people playing other characters to help build up a story. You could look at it like a Fanfiction built up of loads of people.

What are made-ups?

Made-Up's are characters that you create to play in a roleplay. You need to make sure that the roleplay in question allows them or not because some will just allow canon characters which they will name for you.

Difference Between Normal Roleplay and Advanced Roleplay

Well it is pretty simple. Normal roleplay is just for members who are starting out or who don't want to go too much in depth with their roleplay. It allows more of the basic RP skills and is the most popular out of the two. An example of normal roleplay is below:

'Sarah looked down the corridor and headed slowly to the Professor's office. She was slightly nervous of meeting the Professor. Raising her hand, she knocked on the door.'

Advanced roleplay is for more experienced members who wish to go more in depth with their roleplays and feel they can produce more experienced and dramatic roleplay. An example of advanced roleplay is below:

'Sarah look down the corridor, slowly easing up toward the door which had the golden engraved name upon it. She checked behind her to see if anyone was behind her, not that it mattered. She was extremelly nervous and wasn't altogether sure what she might do with all the butterflies tumbling in her stomach. She forced her hand up and reluctantly made contact with the wooden surface, knocking it.'

Different RP Styles

Many people have their different ways of roleplaying and its up to them which way they choose to comfort themselves. Below are just some of the types of roleplaying that are used. Feel free to pick one for yourself.

The Novel RP'er

This type of roleplaying is the most common out of the lot and the most preferred. People who roleplay this way, roleplay as if they are writing a story of some sort. An example of this is below:

'Sarah looked down the corridor and headed slowly to the Professor's office. She was slightly nervous of meeting the Professor. Raising her hand, she knocked on the door. She opened it and greeted the Professor, "Hello there, my name is Sarah, when will class start?" '

The Asterix RP'er

This type of RP'er uses asterix's (*) to play out actions. This is probably best used for Normal roleplaying unless the member goes into detail whilst using the asterix. For example:

'*Sarah looked down the corridor and headed slowly to the Professor's office. She was slightly nervous of meeting the Professor. Raising her hand, she knocked on the door. She opened it and greeted the Professor* "Hello there, my name is Sarah, when will class start?" '

The Italics RP'er (actions)

There is two types of italics RP'ing. This one is where members italic all of the actions that they make. Like so:

'Sarah looked down the corridor and headed slowly to the Professor's office. She was slightly nervous of meeting the Professor. Raising her hand, she knocked on the door. She opened it and greeted the Professor, "Hello there, my name is Sarah, when will class start?" '

The Italics RP'er (speech)

This is exactly the same as the above apart from this time the member italics the speech that their character uses instead of the actions. An example:

'Sarah looked down the corridor and headed slowly to the Professor's office. She was slightly nervous of meeting the Professor. Raising her hand, she knocked on the door. She opened it and greeted the Professor, "Hello there, my name is Sarah, when will class start?" '

The Multi-Colour RP'er

This type of roleplaying is where you can use any of the above types but use colours to show the differences between your actions and speech. An example is below:

'Sarah looked down the corridor and headed slowly to the Professor's office. She was slightly nervous of meeting the Professor. Raising her hand, she knocked on the door. She opened it and greeted the Professor, "Hello there, my name is Sarah, when will class start?"'

Please note that you don't have to follow any of the above, you may choose your own style and you can merge two of the above etc. this is just a simple guideline to the most popularly used ones.

Create your character.

For different sites, the requirements will vary. However, there are some basic information on character creation:
Make your character's bio detailed! If there is anything that can be elaborated on, do it!

Make your character believable. Nobody likes a perfect character or a Mary Sue or Marty Stu. Make your character human, and you will have so much more fun.
Most Character Sheets require a history. Here, you need to explain, explain, explain. Include everything you can think of, don't skip things to save time. Include descriptions etc.

Start RPing.

If you are on a good RP site, there should be absolutely no text talking! Use full sentences and good punctuation and grammar. Use quotation marks when your character is talking.
Never post one-liners! This is usually just one sentence of what your character is doing. Posting dialogue is not an excuse for a one-liner. The people who you roleplay with may not like it at all. The occasional one-liner is fine but do not make it a habit to where everyone else has the brunt of the roleplay. You are there too, so make the attempt to write longer posts.

Use description!

Don't just say "Jane walked into the room and sat down on a chair" Where is Jane? What does the room look like? How did she walk in? How did she sit down? You need to think of all these questions whenever you RP. Instead, you could say something like, "Jane briskly walked into the waiting room at the doctors office, wrinkling her nose at the antiseptic smell. She glanced at the medical posters on the walls, and the magazines by the hard backed chairs lining the walls. She went, and quickly sat down in one of the uncomfortable plastic chairs, folding her ankles properly." Now do you see what you're aiming for?
